Horsemanship is a part of every lesson. Proper care, handling, understanding, and safety are taught in this program from the very beginning.   Flattich Arabians believes riders must be truly knowledgeable about their animals in order to become equestrians. Our horses and students are treated as individuals, each with their own personality and needs.

Students will be evaluated during their first lesson. Factors such as past experience, physical ability and willingness, all play a part. No one will be asked to perform that which they are uncomfortable with.  Group lessons at Flattich Arabians are purposely kept small to ensure each student gets the attention they need.  Lessons are always given by certified instructor Katy Flattich, and/or assistant instructor, Kaye Neville.

Are horseback riding lessons right for me?

·                    Does your child want to ride a neighbor or relative’s horse but you are concerned for their safety?

·                    Are you thinking of purchasing a horse for you or your child and you have questions like: Is my child committed to this?  What does it take to keep a horse? How much money should I pay for a horse? How do I know if a particular horse is right for my family or me?

·                    Do you currently have a horse at home with whom you are experiencing difficulty or do you feel you just want to better your communication?

If you have answered yes to any of these questions then riding lessons with a professional will help you address your concerns. Give us a call to set up an appointment today!

How can horseback riding enrich my child? Horseback riding can enrich your child's life.

Horseback riding is a sport that teaches patience, respect, empathy, and responsibility. This is a physical outdoor activity where any child from the one participating in track to the one in book club can enjoy and succeed. Horses are non-judgmental and children feel less pressure to look, speak, or act certain ways when they are with them.

Patience
is required to learn how to communicate with an animal who will be your partner for the lesson. This animal doesn’t speak our language and prefers to move at it’s own pace.
Respect is learned from the fact that these are large creatures that cannot be forced to comply.
Respect is also enforced at our facility where you must clean up after your self during lessons.
Empathy is learned during every lesson where your actions are judged according to how your horse reacts.
Responsibility
is learned in that while you are here for your lesson, you are in charge of the care and comfort of the horse assigned to you.

Two pieces of equipment are required for participation in the lesson program. One is an ASTM/SEI approved riding helmet. A bicycle helmet is designed for bike accidents. A riding helmet is designed for riding accidents.  The second piece of equipment you will need is a pair of sturdy shoes with a heel. Optimally these are riding boots, but certain other shoes make suitable substitutions. Information will be provided on how and where these items can be purchased.

Close fitting, tucked in shirts with riding pants, breeches, jodhpurs, or jeans that will not ride up are necessary clothing.

Riding and handling horses is a rugged recreational sports activity. No horse is a completely safe animal. If a horse is frightened or provoked it may revert from its training and act according to its natural behavior. Such behavior may include but is not limited to:

        ·            Changing speed or direction abruptly at will

        ·            Shifting its weight from side to side

Testimonials

“As the father of one of Katy's students, I have a tremendous appreciation of the emphasis Katy puts on safety.  It is evident in each lesson that safety is the most important first priority.  I also witness first-hand the strong work ethic she instills in her students.  Riding horses, when done correctly, teaches kids many of life's important lessons.  Katy has done a great job conveying these lessons and values to our kids.”

"After riding with Katy Flattich for nearly five years I have finally gotten the pleasure to lease my very own horse.  Mrs. Katy has watched and worked with me all of these years on bad days and good ones.  I wanted a horse that I had to work with and teach things; Mrs. Katy knew how I rode and told us about a horse that she thought would be a perfect match.  She was right; I got the horse and I am devoted to working with her and embark on a superlative journey.  Katy Flattich has hand-picked nearly all of the horses at Flattich Arabians and I know that all of the girls, myself included, are very pleased with our horses and the way our instructor runs her business."

“I have been riding with Mrs. Katy for 5 years now, and I have been so blessed to have her as a riding instructor. Mrs. Katy found the best horse for me three years ago. I can’t even begin to name all of our accomplishments together since!  I love this barn, as it is a family environment for kids who want to show and have fun. I would never change barns for anything."
